Frequently Asked Questions
What is a charter?
Per the Washington State Constitution, county governments can choose to adopt a "home rule" system of government instead of the default system of government provided for counties to use by state law. By adopting a charter, a county can alter the organization, processes, and election procedures the county uses.
why now?
Thurston County is a great place to live, but it has problems. While some of them, like our high housing costs, are statewide, others are specific to us.
We need a diversity of voices on our Board of Commissioners to respond to these problems. Everyone should have representation as the county addresses the coming decade.
who can be a drafter?
Anyone who is eligible to vote and has lived in Thurston County for longer than five years can run.
